Historic Speeches of Famous American Leaders - Weaving the Social Fabric CD
|
|
Learn how in the early 1920s, politicians strived to maintain social harmony, safeguard liberty and address socio-economic issues that seem strangely relevant even toady.
The economic boom and resultant euphoria that followed the cessation of World War I had a flip side to it. Masked by unprecedented prosperity was an undertone of political, social and religious unrest. Americans were concerned about the impact of liberal immigration laws. Multitudes of Asians and Europeans thronged to the "Promised Land" threatening to damage the social and religious fabric of the country. Huge, unmanageable slums that would inevitably mar the landscape were predicted. Corruption had become rampant and needed to be irradiated. Working conditions in factories were appalling.

Environment and conservation of resources were foremost on the minds of many Americans. Democrats and Republicans debated the relative weaknesses of their rivals while extolling virtues and accomplishments of their own party. This generation of Americans hoped to make the world a more democratic place. At home, this meant expanding the right to vote to women and a number of other election reforms such as the recall, referendum, and direct election of Senators. Abroad, it meant trying to make the world safe for democracy. Voices were raised in the Senate against the proposed League of Nations. Others defended America’s decision to join England in her war against Germany.
While several books and periodicals offer graphic accounts of this period, none come close to the contents of this CD in helping you get a feel of the situation. Ten inspiring speeches that shook the Senate in the 20s are presented here in a miraculously well-preserved form.
Set against a background of the social unrest that gripped America following World War I, the audio recordings of ten historic speeches made in the US Senate are recorded onto this CD, making it a treasure-trove for history buffs. Slip this CD into your CD player and learn for yourself how Democrats and Republicans tried to sway opinions in their favor over social issues that made newspaper headlines in the early 20th Century. EDITORIAL REVIEW:
Ironically, issues that confronted nations a century ago, remain largely unchanged. Perhaps the only tangible difference would be in the magnitude and scope of the problem. The United States is no different in this regard. This fabulous CD contains speeches that were heard in the US Senate nearly a century ago, and yet appear to be fairly contemporary, save for their undeniably vintage quality.
Forceful, articulate and convincing, these discourses speak of deep convictions statesmen harbored on issues that would eventually decide the fate of the country. The clarion call for modifying legislature that governed laws on labor and liberty rings loud and clear in most addresses. Calls for voting in a Republican government and for generous donations towards the war-effort hold your attention just as compellingly as they did decades ago. The social fabric of the country seemed to have been damaged by the War and needed mending before it was ripped beyond repair.
Strangely, you cannot stop wondering how relevant these social issues are to us even today, despite the passage of time. America continues to defend democracy on distant shores while the Senate Hall continues to reverberate with Republican and Democratic outcries.
This CD is a time machine that takes you about nine decades back in time and helps you understand how the United States overcame challenges to emerge as a role model. Had it not been for the efforts of A2ZCDS, these historic speeches may have continued to adorn the shelves of some obscure archives. Now you have them on easily accessible CDs.
History buffs, here is your chance to catch up with issues that made the headlines at the beginning of the 20th century.
