Flowers though, have meant more than just a means of satisfying visual and olfactory senses. Cherished and cultivated for centuries, over 270,000 species of flowers have been documented by scientists. Through the ages, flowers have served as symbols of affection, sentiments and also as a part of a physician’s armory.

Asters were laid on the graves of French soldiers to symbolize the wish that things had turned out differently. Aztecs used dahlias as a treatment for epilepsy. Before insulin was discovered diabetics were often given a diabetic sugar made from dahlia tubers. Chemicals derived from dahlias are used in clinical tests for liver and kidney functions. The British used the stem base (corms) as a poultice and for drawing out thorns and splinters. A mixture of powdered corms and goat's milk was a favorite remedy for colic.

Lilies, which find mention in both the Old and the New Testament, symbolize chastity and virtue. In both the Christian and pagan traditions, the lily is a symbol of fertility. In Greek marriage ceremonies the bride wears a crown of lilies and wheat... purity and abundance. Lilies are also a symbol of death, and at one time lilies were placed on the graves of children.

Rose hips from the species, Rosa rugosa, which contain 2,275 to 6,977 milligrams of vitamin C per 100 grams of pulp, were used for the prevention of scurvy. Greek women thought that if the father of their unborn child ate large, new tubers, the baby would be a boy. If the mother ate small tubers, they would give birth to a baby girl. The most famous orchid, the vanilla orchid, was said to give strength to the Aztecs, who drank vanilla mixed with chocolate.

Compelled by innate curiosity, I clicked on the first image in this outstanding CD and was greeted by an explosion of colors - blue, violet, pink, orange, red and a host of brilliant yellows. My curiosity quickly gave way to unchecked amazement as nature’s magic unfolded before my eyes with every click of the mouse. Bewitched by this astounding collation of brilliant images of flowers, I spent a fruitful afternoon allowing myself to be held captive by the contents of this rare CD.

Not tied down by strapping of professionalism, photographers - many of who were probably amateur photography buffs - provide a refreshingly child like fascination in these memorable photographs. This CD is more of an art lover’s delight than a compilation of scientific illustrations and this is what makes it so endearing.

Witness nature’s glorious ambassadors at their best in this magnificent collection of some of the best floral photographs. I was mesmerized and I don’t see why other lovers of nature shouldn’t share my sentiments.
